Michael Steve Hurst

Steve, as he was known by family and friends, passed away from this life on Monday night, July 14, 2025.

He was born in Leon, Iowa on August 6, 1950, to M.W. (Meredith) Hurst and Dixie Brenizer Hurst, moving to Florida when he was 5 years old.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his son, David Hurst.

Steve is survived by his wife of 34 years, Myra Phillips Hurst. Their blended family consists of three daughters, Melanie Cruz, Suzanne Hurst, Jeannie Whitehead (Tim); one son, Jaret Smith (Fern). They have ten grandchildren, Ryan Braddock, Triston Cruz, Adain Cruz, Caitlin Hurst, Nathanial Hurst, Daniel Hurst, Tyeler Whitehead (Karlie), Toby Whitehead, Jade Tijerina (Danny), Hannah Smith; great-grandchildren, Mo Jo Braddock, Audrey Tijerina, Annaleigh Tijerina, Alyssanndra Tijerina, Aizlee Tijerina. He is also survived by one sister, Jennifer Bennett, and brothers, Pat Hurst (Janet), Allen Hurst (Kathy), and Dale Hurst (Margeret).

He worked 35 years with the Florida Department of Agriculture, livestock division, creating many friends along the way. His biggest interest was in his Farmall Tractors; whether it was a parade or a plow day, he was up to attending. A second interest was woodworking. He delighted in making small shelves for friends having special occasions. Some would consider him a jack-of-all-trades and the master of all. He was a true handyman who loved Chevy vehicles and the Florida Gators.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Friday, July 18, 2025, at Cottondale First Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Petty officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM, prior to the funeral service.
