Henry S. Applewhite, age 81, of Grand Ridge, Florida passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at his son and daughter-in-law’s home. He fought cancer with grace and dignity and never complained or questioned why. He is now returned home to his Lord and family.
He was born July 20, 1944, to Robert and Christine Applewhite in Marianna, FL. Henry loved fishing and hunting in his younger years. He was retired from the Florida Department of Corrections with over 31 years of service. He also retired from Bay Correctional Institution with over 10 years of service. He lived his retirement years in Panama City Beach with his wife, Gloria, and after her death a few years ago he moved back to Grand Ridge. For the last few years of his life, his daily enjoyment was walking his beloved dog, Sophia.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria Applewhite; and his brothers, Bobby and Fuller Applewhite.
He was survived by his sons, Chris Applewhite and wife, Kim and Kevin Applewhite and wife, Amanda; his granddaughters, Morgan Gainer and Stevie Applewhite; his grandsons, Cole Applewhite (Autumn) and Turner Gainer (Maggie); his great-grandsons, KP Garrett and Nate Applewhite; and his great-granddaughter, Gradie Gainer.
The family would like to thank the staff of Emerald Coast Hospice for the care they provided. A special thanks to his son, Chris Applewhite who was his caregiver in his last years; his brother, Charles Applewhite who was always there to take him to church or do whatever was needed and Stephanie Gilley, for her weekly visits to help Henry out.
Funeral service will be 11 AM Friday, April 3, 2026, at Greenwood Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
