Gladys Marie Douglas, age 89 of Vernon, Florida, was ushered into the presence of the Lord, Friday, April 17th, 2026, at Marianna Nursing and Care Center. She was born Saturday, July 25th, 1936, in Kinard, Florida. She attended Kinard School and would graduate from Blountstown High School in 1954. She married Roy Douglas on June 13th, 1954, and they journeyed life together for 57 years. For over five decades she served faithfully as a pastor’s wife fulfilling many roles. In particular, she was a musician and a singer. She played the organ and piano in church and often sung specials with her daughters in the local church, at revival meetings and funerals.
More than a shop owner, she was a dedicated florist for over 55 years, owning both Vernon Florist and Marie’s Flowers. She believed flowers spoke a language of their own, designed to express the love and gratitude that people often couldn’t put into words. With a unique eye for beauty, she transformed her talent into stunning arrangements for homes, churches, and special occasions.
In the latter years of her life, when the Marianna Nursing and Care Center became her home away from home, she would still build flower arrangements from her room to bring cheer and blessing to others. When she was no longer able to make a flower decoration, she made jewelry of every sort. It was her hobby and one that she delighted in doing. In only in the last years of her life, bedridden and unable to walk, her world shrunk to what she could read or watch on Facebook and YouTube. From her bed via livestream, she visited various churches on Sunday, watched revivals and enjoyed special singing events.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Roy Douglas; her parents, John and Versie Daniels; great-granddaughter, Oaklynn Sage Cook; brother, F.M. Daniels; and sister, Joyce Vickery.
Marie is survived by her children, Linda Cook, Lisa Mitchel and Juno Douglas and wife, Aimee; five grandchildren, Johnathan Cook, Doug Cook and wife, Hali, Jordan Mitchell, Brad Douglas and wife, Samantha, and Valaree Shuler, and husband, Jake; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two sisters, Bertie McGill and Ruby Barlow; two brothers, Clifford Daniels and Doyle Daniels; sister-in-law, Brenda Daniels, and brother-in-law, Donald Ray Vickery, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Special thanks is expressed to the nursing and rehabilitation staff of the Marianna Nursing and Care Center (formerly Courtyard) for their attentive, dedicated, and proficient care of Mrs. Douglas. The care they gave her for 9 years is commendable. There are too many RN’s, LPN’S, CNA’s, kitchen, and maintenance workers to mention. All were a blessing to her in some way.
Special gratitude is expressed to VITAS Healthcare for their professional care and personal attention given to Mrs. Douglas. Her family appreciates the patience and guidance given to help them walk this last week with their mother.
Mrs. Douglas’ funeral will be 2 PM Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel with a time of visitation with her family from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Her internment will follow at Vernon Evangelistic Church Cemetery (also known as Journey Church) located at Hwy. 79, 3119 Main Street in Vernon at 4 PM with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
