Elizabeth Jane Chafin, lovingly known as “Memaw,” passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the age of 81 at Marianna Health and Rehab Center. She was born to Robert Austin and Gladys Culver Austin on August 9, 1944, in Blountstown, and lived a life centered on love, family, and kindness. Elizabeth made her home in Marianna, Florida, where she touched the lives of many with her caring heart and gentle spirit. She worked for the Calhoun County & Jackson County Clerk of Courts Office for 35+ years before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband and soulmate, James Robert Chafin; her daughter, Cheryl Mayo; her brother, James Austin; and several brothers and sisters-n-law.
Jane is survived by her loving children and stepchildren: Gina Smith (Dewey Smith), Stephen Hall (Barbara Hall), Cindy Jordan (John Jordan), and James Chafin (Lisa Chafin). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Ashley, Cory, Staci, Taylor, Melanie, Julie, Zachery, Brittne, Trinity, Dawson, Carla, Matt, Caitlin, and Madison, along with 20 great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy and pride.
She is also survived by her brothers, John Austin (Sharon Austin), Ralph Austin (Sherri Austin), and sister-in-law Sharon Austin; along with sisters-in-law, Paula Chafin, Sarah Wright (Ronnie), Elsie Myrick and Brenda Peters. She is survived by many nieces and nephews as well as extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Known affectionately as “Memaw,” Jane was the heart of her family. Her warmth, strength, wisdom, and unconditional love created lasting memories for everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives through the family she adored and the countless lives she touched through many years of faithful service to her community.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
Graveside service will be 2:00 PM, Friday, May 22, 2026, in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with Rev. Ronnie Wright officiating and James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
